How Much Should You Charge to Create a Website?

So you know how to create websites because you took a class. Or you build your own websites. You have experience. Now you’re wondering, how much should you charge to build a website?

A basic business website contains about five static pages that share information about the company.

It takes about 2 weeks to create from scratch.

You will be on your computer doing a full day of work, everyday, for two whole weeks.

How much do you want to make in 2 weeks?

$250 a day sounds reasonable.

Making websites involves a huge amount of attention to detail, coordinating various aspects of the website, working on seo, transferring files, tailoring the message and frankly a lot of work.

In your life, $250 a day for two weeks, could cover at least some of your life expenses depending on how you live.

So that works out to 10 full days of work, giving yourself weekends off, which is $2,500.

A professional website creator should charge $2,500 for a basic, 5-page website.

But what if the client doesn’t want to pay this? Maybe find another client who recognizes the skill and effort involved.

The client could decide to make their own website. But if they do, they are looking at two full weeks of work on the website, where they will have no time to work on their own business.

And as we know, making a website, especially if you don’t have a lot of experience, and often even if you do, can be overwhelming. Each platform is different. WordPress is glitchy as hell, and each theme is different with its own set of potential headaches.

There is always the possibility of something going wrong.

What happens if you decide to charge a few hundred for a website?

You could do that. But then you need a different source of income. Where are you going to get the money that you need to live, unless you charge the clients for the work that you’re doing?

When you design websites, remember that it is not about giving the lowest price on the block.

It is about offering the best quality, so that your client doesn’t look at the website later and say “how come this doesn’t work and how come this broke” and “where is this?” and “why are people not signing up,” and all of that really important stuff that makes your website function.

Your website design skills hold value, assuming you have experience and know what you’re doing.

So charge enough so that you are able to live!
