All right, so with my son being home with a touch of a cold all day today, I decided to buckle down and finish up that list of company contacts that I keep talking about. My goal was to create a pitch list of marketing contacts at companies that freelancers like you and I would want to work for.
This was the process I followed for making the pitch list:
- Research company principals, jot down the name of the CEO (it’s always a good idea to know the CEO even if it’s never mentioned in the interview, am I right?).
- Research names of people like the head of marketing, chief technology officer, director of communications and such.
- Attempt to locate their email addresses. This is not easy.
- Search their LinkedIn.com pages and link to those.
- Add any relevant notes. For example:
-
- Big Lots does not currently have a marketing department head, but they’re still in business despite so many store closings. Might be a good time to get your head in the door.
- Winn-Dixie was bought by Aldi.
- Bright Horizons has open positions for several marketing managers (may be filled by the time you read this).
- Yum! Brands owns Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, KFC and the Habit Burger Grill.
- Famous Footwear is Caleres.
- Burt’s Bees is owned by Clorox.
- Joel Yashinsky was appointed Burker King’s Chief Marketing Officer (U.S. & Canada) as of April 14, 2025 – he came from Applebees.
Why am I telling you how I went about gathering my info for the company pitch list?
It doesn’t bother me in the least if you decide to NOT download my free pitch list for freelancers. If you prefer to do this the long, slow way, you can start from scratch and create your own pitch list. Head on over to Google.
The thing is, though, that there are SO MANY STEPS to getting your freelance stuff prepared. Having a list of company contacts will be a huge load off your mind. You can run through it, decide what niches you’d like to design or write for, and then pick and choose.
What format is the pitch list I’m about to send you?
The pitch list is lightly formatted as a PDF, so you can download and view it from your phone, desktop PC, laptop or wherever you need to reference the contacts. Here’s a screen shot of the welcome/thanks intro.
